Teaching Your Preschooler to Follow the Rules

Posted on 07-28-2017

Once your child starts preschool or daycare, she will have to get used to a new level of interacting with other children and people of authority. Preschool is filled with various activities that require following rules and instructions. If your child is apprehensive or stubborn when it comes to discipline, don’t fret! Here are a few ways to teach your child to listen to her teachers and respect her peers.

Obey your teacher

Above all, your child must learn to respect and obey the teacher. Start by explaining to your preschooler why her teacher has the final call. Teachers are there to ensure the safety of students and help them have a wonderful experience at school. Tell your child to always listen when their teacher is speaking and to follow directions—she will have a better time and learn so much more if she simply listens!

Raise your hand

One of the most important things a child can learn when starting school is to raise he hand and wait before speaking. Many classrooms are filled with children talking at once, not aware of when it is appropriate to speak. Remind your child that she must raise her hand in order to be heard in the classroom.

Have patience and be nice

With so many other classmates, your child might need to be told to always wait her turn. Instilling this early on teaches patience and respect for others. Furthermore, to make friends and enjoy her activities, your child must learn how to use kind language with her classmates. Words like “please” and “thank you” will take her far!

A key element to following directions is learning how to listen to teachers in order to know what to do. Remind your child not only to be quiet while the teacher is speaking, but also to pay attention to the teacher’s words at all times.
